Little Wooly Baskets Blocks 1 and 2

Okay quilters, here we go. After much ado the Little Wooly Baskets BOM is starting. Basic BOM information can be found on the tab above labeled Little Wooly Baskets. Above is a photo of Block 1. This free BOM is now closed. The entire pattern will be available for purchase soon. On the pattern page I have labeled the color of wool I used. You of course can use any color you like. If you would like the background fabric, Buttermilk wool for the baskets or the thread combo I am using, Primitive Gatherings has those on their website. Go to the Block of the Month page and choose Little Wooly Basket supplies.
Here is Block 2.
Use your favorite applique method. Keep in mind these are primitive designs. Placement does not need to be precise, only pleasing to the eye. I cut my berries on block 2 free hand and I also cut all the stems on each block freehand. This lends a folk art feel.
For those new to wool - when using felted wool you do not need a seam allowance.
For those wanting more info on my method, here is a quick rundown of how I do my wool applique. My way is not the right way, just what works for me.
1. I cut my blocks 6 1/2" and seal the edges with Fray Check to prevent raveling and distortion.
2. I don't use fusibles. To me it's just another step and another expense. Not to mention that one of the great things about wool is how easy it is to stitch and I think you lose that with a fusible.
3. I trace my templates on freezer paper, shiny side down. Iron to the wool, (no right or wrong side to wool). Cut out on the drawn line. Layout the shapes on my background piece and either pin or glue in place.(I find glue sticks to work nicely.) Start stitching.
4. I don't buttonhole. I don't care for the look personally. I prefer for my stitches to be less visible. I use two strands of floss and just do a little applique stitch. I find this to be quicker and to use less thread. Just my personal opinion. You do what works best for you.
5. Start stitching and share, share, share your photos!
Happy Stitching, Dawn

  1. Thank you Dawn, I have never worked with wool, but I have a large collection of the brushed cotton and plan to work these adorable blocks in the fabrics I have. I'm excited to get started!

  2. You sound like me, just cut and sew, no fuss and it makes each one unique and primitive. This will be a fun on to do, so hope i can keep up.

    1. Not a stupid question, the background is cotton. I am using a Rustic Homespun from Diamond Textiles.
