Blue Woven Fabric

In October a new quilting magazine called Quilts We Love was launched. It is produced by the same folks that publish Primitive Quilts and Projects. It is a great magazine and features a variety of styles in quilts. The interesting part of the magazine is it features older quilts. We all see quilts on Pinterest and think- wow I wish I had that pattern. Well this is the kind of magazine that will fill that need. If you missed it the first time it debuted, it's not too late. There are some awesome quilts in the magazine and I am fortunate to have my Abundance quilt included.
Since the magazine came out I have had numerous inquiries as to the background fabric I used.
This is Abundance hanging in the show in Houston this fall. It shows the fabric a little more clearly (and her pretty ribbon.)
The fabric I used for the background is two different blue wovens. They are not from the same line or company. I am not sure who the manufacturer is- I want to say the big plaid is from Andover and the other woven is Buggy Barn for Henry Glass. They are older wovens.
Here's the deal folks, wovens make awesome backgrounds. The texture of them adds so much to a quilt. I love using pretty florals to off set their more primitive feel. I buy wovens whenever I see any that catch my eye. I don't need to have a purpose because I know that I will use them for something. I usually buy 4 yards at a time if I don't have a specific project in mind. Then when I get ready to start a new design I can go the shelf and pull them off and go. I love Diamond Textiles and have started using them quite a bit. Homestead Hearth has a large selection that they continually add to and of course I love Moda wovens. French General is a favorite and Minick and Simpson has new wovens in their Snowfall line that are fabulous. This is geared for a Christmas feel but the wovens could be used for any quilt.

So the moral of the story is whenever you come across beautiful woven fabrics- Buy Them! In at least 4 Yrd cuts. You will use them.

Happy Quilting, Dawn

I do have woven and hopefully will make more quilts and use them, this year.

  5. Your quilt is so lovely. I've hesitated to use wovens because I pre-shrink everything and the more loosely woven fabrics are a mess to pre-shrink and press. What do you do?

    1. I don't pre-wash anything. I know there are those who are shaking their heads but I make a lot of quilts and have no issues. I do press my fabric with a really hot iron and spray starch. This kind of shrinks it a bit and when I wash my quilts, I use cold water, delicate cycle with a couple of color catchers. I will say this- the wovens that are on the market are a MUCH higher quality than the homespuns of several years ago. They are more tightly woven and handle better. Just the way I do things.
